Frequently Asked Questions
What age should my puppy start training?
The earlier, the better! Puppies can begin training as early as 8 weeks old. Early training helps build confidence, encourages good manners, and prevents unwanted behaviors before they become habits. It’s never too late to start—dogs of all ages can learn.
Do I need to be home?
Yes. We believe training is most successful when owners are actively involved. You’ll learn alongside your dog so you can confidently continue practicing between sessions and maintain long-term success.
How long is each session?
Most training sessions last approximately 60 minutes. The exact length may vary depending on your dog’s needs, age, attention span, and training goals.
What should I bring?
Please have plenty of small, high-value treats your dog loves, a regular leash, a flat collar or well-fitted harness, and any favorite toys that help motivate your dog. We’ll let you know if anything additional is needed before your session.
Do you use e-collars, prong collars, or choke chains?
No. We use positive, reward-based training methods that focus on building trust, confidence, and clear communication. Our goal is to teach your dog what to do through encouragement and reinforcement rather than fear or intimidation.

Training Options
Training Consultation
60 Minutes- For owners who want professional guidance whether looking for just recommendations or ready to start training sessions with our team. The consult is our opportunity to meet your pet and to go over their needs and expected goals. We will come to your home and begin the process of creating your training plan, becoming acquainted with the pet, and/ or creating recommendations that our trainer may observe. The consult will be valid for up to (3) months if the client is not ready to sign up for classes. After (3) months a follow up consultation may be needed.

Training Walks
30 Minutes- Training walks are our take on a new service that is not seen in normal training programs. We believe at Sailor’s, this allows us to provide the opportunity of extended sessions with your pup and focusing on consistency and real world problems. Reinforcement of learned skills is essential to seeing progress and the results clients need for a healthy relationship with their pet. These 1 on 1 sessions allow our trainer and your pup to work on newly learned skills for out-of-the-home situations. Perfect for busy owners who want professional reinforcement between lessons, after graduation, or as needed.
- *Training walks are only for clients who are enrolled in a training package, want to keep up with consistency after graduation, or has utilized a private training session.
Private Lessons
60 Minutes- Private Lessons are for clients that just need a training session here or there, focusing on a specific need, or looking for a brush up on good training practices to ensure reinforcement. This option is for clients that don’t want to go all in with a training package and pay for each class as needed. These 1 on 1 sessions allow you to have the needed time with your trainer and to ask those specific questions or concerns that a packaged session may not address. Perfect for more specific and individual needs.
Refresher Lesson
60 Minutes- Refresher lessons are for clients that have previously completed a Training Package with Sailor’s. This session will focus on training material that was already provided to your pet and to help brush up on methods to ensure reinforcement is occurring. This session is not to address new issues or train new behaviors that may be included in another package.
